Case Exploration of Visualization of Diffusion Mass Transfer at Microscale — Teaching Innovation in Transport Processes

Abstract: "Transport Processes" is a core yet challenging course in chemical engineering, with the primary difficulty lying in its heavy reliance on theoretical mathematical descriptions to elucidate the laws of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. Students often struggle to intuitively understand diffusion mass transfer phenomena at the microscale, leading to rote memorization without constructing a corresponding physical picture. To address this pedagogical challenge, we turn to actual microfluidic experiments rather than simulations or theoretical derivations, and propose two visualization-based teaching cases that enable in-situ observation of diffusion at the microscale. The first case utilizes the one-dimensional diffusion of fluorescent nanoparticles in a microchannel, while the second case involves the diffusion of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas into a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution, combined with high-speed microscopic imaging and image analysis to determine the diffusion coefficient based on Fick's second law. Both cases transform the theoretical diffusion differential equations into intuitive, dynamic concentration distribution evolution images. Post-teaching questionnaire surveys indicate that 96.30% of the students greatly favored these visualization cases, and the 98.15% of students believed that it improved learning efficiency. More than 90% of the students considered the visualized cases relatively easy to understand. The survey results indicate that introducing microfluidic visualization technology into "Transport Processes" teaching effectively builds a cognitive bridge between mathematical formulations and physical reality, stimulates students' learning interest, reduces the difficulty of conceptual comprehension, and improves lecture atmosphere. This teaching innovation provides a novel perspective for the instruction of the mass transfer module within the "Transport Processes" course.

Quest for Quality Education and Anticipation for Permanent Settlement: Nepalese Students’ Migration to the UK as a One-way Trajectory and Brain Drain

Abstract: Unlike the existing education related migration literature, this study argues that higher education factors alone may not be the main reasons for Nepalese students’ migration motivation to the UK. Through a rigorous qualitative analysis of thirty-five in-depth interviews with diverse cohorts of Nepalese students in the UK, this study illuminates the multifaceted processes by which educational migration transitions from temporary sojourning experiences into long-term permanent settlement pathways. Grounded on framework of push and pull factors, this study identifies Nepal’s unstable political situation, lack of employment opportunities and unsecured future as the key push factors, while revealing the perceived value of British education, enhanced global employment opportunity and prospects for secured future as the primary pull factors. In addition to this, the study further highlights limited return intention among Nepalese students, instead, the study reveals their deep-seated residential intention in the UK. Thus, on the one hand, this study signals Nepalese students’ migration as a predominantly one-way trajectory, indirectly functioning as a mechanism of one-way trajectory and systemic brain- drain. Simultaneously, the findings underscore the necessity of comprehensive and effective policy intervention designed to mitigate long-term socio-economic consequences linked with such persistent unidirectional migration. Thus, this study offers a necessary re-evaluation of established narratives regarding international students’ migration patterns.

Abstract: Environmental education at the secondary school level is crucial for developing environmentally conscious citizens. This study examines how secondary school education shapes students' environmental attitudes and environmentally friendly behaviors in Chattogram, Bangladesh. A quantitative survey method was used with four research questions (1. What is the level of environmental knowledge among secondary school students? 2. What are the attitudes of secondary school students toward environmental protection? 3. To what extent do secondary school students practice sustainable behavior in their daily lives? 4. How does the school contribute to promoting students’ environmental literacy and sustainable behavior through textbooks, curriculum, teacher support and school activities?) of 130 respondents. Students' environmental knowledge, attitude, environmentally friendly behavior, and perceived support from the school were assessed. The results showed that students had high levels of environmental awareness and positive attitudes toward conservation. However, students engaged in eco-friendly behaviors at a moderate level, indicating a significant gap between knowledge and practice. While schools are seen as strong enablers in providing access to and encouragement of environmental content, current educational systems appear to be more effective in raising awareness than in promoting habitual environmentally friendly behavior. The study concludes that a shift towards experiential, participatory, and action-oriented learning is essential to transform environmental literacy among young students into actual environmentally friendly behavior.
